General al-Naif was critically injured in an assassination attempt on 9 July 1978 as he left the Intercontinental Hotel in London's Park Lane and died the following day.〔(Arms cache found at Iraqi embassy )〕 His killer, Salem Ahmed Hassan, was quickly captured.
